Islington Welcomes New Electric Sweepers
Islington has taken delivery of six new Bucher CityCat VR17e sub-compact sweepers, marking a significant step forward in its commitment to cleaner, quieter streets.
The newly launched CityCat VR17e is Bucher Municipal’s first fully electric sub-compact sweeper, purpose-built for dense urban environments. Compact, agile and zero-emissions, it is designed to operate effectively across pedestrian areas, cycle lanes, precincts and narrow streets, walkways and pathways.
The new fleet is expected to support Islington’s sustainability targets, helping to reduce emissions by approximately 20 tonnes of CO₂ per year and cut diesel usage by more than 7,000 litres annually.
The new sweepers have already captured local attention, named “Sweeping Beauty”, the vehicle’s name was chosen following a borough-wide school competition. The winning entry was submitted by six-year-old Adele from Thornhill Primary School, selected from more than 130 suggestions across 16 schools and a public vote of over 240 responses.
Paul Robinson, Acting Head Teacher at Thornhill Primary School, said:
“It is fantastic to see one of our pupils’ creativity celebrated in this way and to see the council making it happen for a healthier, brighter future for our children.”
Cllr Rowena Champion, Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport at Islington Council, added:
“It’s fantastic to see local children getting involved in shaping a more environmentally friendly future for Islington. We can’t wait to see Sweeping Beauty out and about in the borough.”
The Bucher CityCat VR17e reflects a shared commitment to creating more sustainable urban environments.
