Building Resilience in Sewer Maintenance for AMP8

As the UK water industry prepares for AMP8, the next Ofwat regulatory period, investment in innovation, service capability and workforce development will be essential. This AMP8 investment cycle will place renewed emphasis on sustainability, performance and accountability, challenging water companies and contractors to strengthen long-term resilience across wastewater and drainage networks.

At Bucher Municipal, engineering innovation and service infrastructure are being developed in parallel to support operators responding to AMP8 resilience objectives and evolving water industry requirements.

Responding to the pressures shaping AMP8

Climate-driven flooding, population growth and ageing infrastructure are placing increasing strain on sewer and drainage systems. As water companies plan AMP8 programmes, operators are re-evaluating how wastewater asset maintenance, equipment design, operational data and service capability can work together to improve reliability, reduce downtime and support sewer network resilience.

Bucher Municipal continues to invest in practical solutions that align with AMP8 priorities, including environmental performance, fleet uptime, innovation and long-term operational value.

Equipment built for today’s challenges

Across the UK, sewer cleaning vehicles remain a critical part of flood management and routine maintenance strategies. Modern combination sewer cleaners, capable of jetting, vacuuming and recycling water, allow water companies and contractors to maintain flow efficiency while responding quickly to storm events and blockages.

Vehicle design increasingly reflects the dual need for preventative maintenance and emergency response. Features such as variable tank partitions maintain separation between clean water and sludge, extending on-station time, while high-performance pumps and ergonomic controls support safe, efficient operation in demanding environments.

Compact, low-noise vehicles are improving access in urban areas, while continuous recycling systems help reduce freshwater consumption; supporting AMP8 sustainability targets, carbon reduction commitments and responsible water use.

“Urban operations often call for a smaller, more agile vehicle that still delivers full performance,” explains Marc Rapson, Sales Manager for Sewer Cleaners at Bucher Municipal.

“The fully electric CityFlex C40e provides exactly that, a compact combination unit with zero tailpipe emissions, low noise and the same high productivity as its diesel counterpart. It’s ideally suited to city centres, low-emission zones and sites with access or weight restrictions.”

“Our FlexLine series is designed for multi-purpose use, from routine sewer maintenance and emergency cleaning to industrial applications,” Marc adds.

“That adaptability gives operators the flexibility they need to respond to changing operational and regulatory demands throughout AMP8.”

Building resilience through local support

As the industry shifts from reactive repair to long-term resilience under AMP8, the infrastructure supporting frontline vehicles has become just as important as the equipment itself. Reliable access to service, spare parts and technical expertise is now a key component of AMP8 asset management strategies.

To strengthen this foundation, Bucher Municipal has relocated its Central Region Service Centre to a significantly larger, purpose-built facility in Castle Donington. The site acts as a UK hub for sewer cleaner pre-delivery inspections, hosts the national demonstration fleet and provides a centrally located training academy for customers and operators.

The facility also manages refurbishment and ready-to-go stock, helping water companies and contractors reduce vehicle downtime and maintain operational continuity with rapid access to equipment.

Looking ahead to AMP8

As AMP8 gains momentum, success will depend on how effectively the water industry combines innovation with operational practicality. Continued investment in low-emission sewer cleaning equipment, strong regional service infrastructure and workforce training will be essential to meeting regulatory expectations and maintaining resilient drainage systems.

Through these developments, Bucher Municipal is supporting a more sustainable, better-prepared sector; one ready to meet the environmental, operational and regulatory challenges of AMP8 and beyond.
